Looking after your Mental Health with some amazing Essential Oils

Mental health and essential oilsOur brains automatically associate the word “healthy” with physical health. But mental health is just as important as your physical. Emotional health affects nearly all aspects of our lives, from how we make decisions, how we interact with others, and how we respond to situations that affect us personally.

Acknowledging mental health and learning how to deal with it is so very important to your wellbeing. When you understand how to manage and counteract the negative aspects in your life, your health will heal.

Here are a few top tips:

1. Talk About Your Feelings

Talking about your feelings isn’t a sign of weakness. Take charge of your metal wellbeing by sharing your emotions, your feelings and even your fears by asking for help. Having someone to listen to you makes you feel supported and the act could help encourage others to speak out and seek help for themselves. Talking to friends is great plus there are so many therapists that are trained to support you.

2. Stay Active

Studies have found that exercising regularly could lower the risk of depression. Physical exercise can boost your self-esteem, help you concentrate, sleep and feel better. Physical activity can be as simple as walking. The more fresh air you breathe means you breathe in more oxygen, increasing the amount of serotonin in your body. Exercising allows your brain to focus on one sole activity and forget about everything else. As a athletics coach I have seen this so many times over and over again, its SO powerful. I run evenings where people can just come to run or walk. No talking etc and its so good to see people change.

3. Eat Well and drink Water

Having a healthy and balanced diet affects how we feel both physically and mentally. Include healthy amounts of proteins, essential fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water into your daily routine. I set an hourly timer during the day to remind me to drink water. We get so busy in our day that time flies and we sometimes forget these simple things.

4. Keep in Touch and Learn to Let go

Friends and family make you feel loved and cared for, so surround yourself with people who support you and include you in their lives. Make time to see them regularly or, at least, give them a call.

If you think being around someone is negatively influencing your mental health, don’t be afraid to let them go. Rid yourself of negative relationships and focus on the relationships that bring you joy and positivity. Have a look at your social media channels and carry out a detox of them too – so good to do this.

5. Sleep More

Sleep is the most underestimated factor when thinking about overall health. A good and long (7 to 9 hours) night’s sleep is essential for your mind and our bodies repair cells that need tending to in this time. If you have troubled sleep, start by making small lifestyle adjustments like creating a relaxing environment in your room before sleep and eat earlier to give your body the proper amount of time to digest before you go to bed. I have some free sleep PDF’s that may help – JUST ASK.

6. Take a Break

In today’s world, the idea of giving our minds a break from functioning seems impossible. A lot of the time our minds are in overdrive because there are endless stimuli coming from so many different platforms that hold our attention. Phones and  laptops are just a few examples, and if you never take any time out from technology, you will not be doing your mental health any favours. Take a mini digital detox every week, even for just half a day or a couple of hours.

7. Accept Who You Are

Emily Wright gave a powerful speech on self-acceptance during the last day of Together Global Convention. Don’t ever be afraid to be yourself and accept that you are who you are: you do not need to be like anyone else. Work towards being a better version of yourself and not a different one. Above all, enjoy being you.

8. Do Something You Love

Do you have a dream you always wanted to achieve? A new skill you never had time to learn? Work on your daily schedule to fit in an activity that fulfils you and keeps you motivated. Whether you want to revive an old hobby or break free from social restraints and meet new people, trying new things or just meeting new people means you can be you, doing something you love.

9. Care for Others

Helping others in any way is one of the most fulfilling areas in life you can work on. Volunteering, taking an active role in your community or just giving a helping hand to a person in need are all excellent ways of building new relationships. Being able to help someone can give us a new perspective on our own problems and make us feel needed and valued.

10. Use Your Oils

Besides these resources, you can use essential oils to support your emotional wellbeing by creating a sense of calmness or producing an uplifting environment.

Our top five uplifting oils and blends are: Wild Orange, Citrus Bliss, Cheer (this is my all time favourite), Elevation and Motivate
Our top five calming oils and blends are: Melissa, Lavender, Peace, Balance and PastTense

Solely thinking about mental wellbeing, doTERRA has just released a new line of products called Adaptiv that are proving to be amazing also.

Applying essential oils for emotional benefits

When you’re ready to use essential oils for emotional wellbeing, there are a few ways to effectively experience the potency and power they have to offer. When you find the oil you want to use, try any of these application methods:

  • Massage onto the base of the neck
  • Use an essential oil diffuser
  • Apply a drop to the palms and inhale
  • Rub into the wrists and carry the aroma with you all day

Finally, don’t be afraid to seek extra help. When your quest for an emotionally-balanced life becomes overwhelming, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Reaching out to friends and family and seeking professional help can provide you with extra help on your journey to better emotional health.
