Oils by Jo Resource Centre

Here is a list of my frequently asked questions I thought I would share with you and hopefully will help some people. The resources I have used are www.doterra.com, Modern Essentials reference book and personal experiences. I would also like to remind you to please wash your hands after applying any Essential Oils as they can sting if they get into your eyes and other sensitive areas.

The most common oils sold?

For me the most regular Essential Oil sold is Deep Blue followed very closely by Lavender, On Guard and then Balance. As an athletics coach I am working with athletes on a regular basis and they have many kinds of injuries and Deep Blue is the product I recommend the most. Depending on the injury there are many blends that I also make up for them to use too. Lavender is my second oil I seem to sell a lot due to sleep and stress mainly, but also to relax in the very busy world we live in. It’s a great one to have at home for popping a drop in the bath to relax, helping with burns and any skin irritations. Then comes On Guard this is another great oil for keeping the immune system fully functioning and staying fit and healthy. This comes in a few different forms the oil, beadlets and softgels. Then the next oil is Balance this is also called the grounding blend as it really supports the body in relaxing and calming way. I’m always working with many individuals both girls and boys suffering with exam anxiety as they seem to be put under so much pressure from schools and also parents on some occasions. I also work with athletes that lack the confidence and think they can’t win or even compete against certain individuals and this oil seems to really help with that. Many business and life coaches also recommend this oil for their clients to help with work and family overload.

Least common oils used and sold?

My least common oils used and sold are Petitgrain, Spikenard, Cilantro, Cassia, Basil, Arborvitae and Juniper Berry.

Who are the other essential oils companies and suppliers?

You can get Essential Oils from High Street stores such as Boots and Holland & Barrett. There are also other companies such as Tisserand, Neil’s Yard, Young Living and many others.

I have seen dōTERRA Essential Oils much cheaper on Amazon!

Yes they are available for purchase on Amazon however I have had a few customers that have had very bad experiences with the oils not being so pure and effective. I have also heard that customers have purchased some oils and that the oils have been further tested and there has been some contaminated items found in them, So I would highly recommend to purchase from a reputable supplier. As an employer how can I improve staff wellness through Essential Oils?

This is a very popular question as it would seem employers are wanting to look after their staff and their wellness. I love to work with people that want to help both themselves and their staff be the best people they can be. With the use of a diffuser and certain specific oils we can create the type of environment that suits that individual and company. During work hours and also out of work people have issues and if we can help their emotional state with an oil that is a fantastic opportunity to provide for their happiness and will result in a happier employee. Some examples of oils that could support employees are Peppermint for focus and energy, Wild Orange for uplifting and calming, Lemon for uplifting and fresh clean smell and Lavender for calming a stressful area. These oils can also be applied to the wrist and the back of the neck. Here is some further information for you https://www.oilsbyjo.co.uk/news/article/using-essential-oils-in-the-workplace.html

I would offer clients a smell of a selected few oils and see which oil they are drawn too. There are many kinds of stress such as emotional, body and environmental we have a few specific oils that can support stress and calming and they are Lavender, Serenity, Wild Orange, Breathe, Cheer, Elevation, Deep Blue, Aromatouch, Forgive and Console to name a few. A diffuser is a plug in device that you add water too and then add 1 drop of the desired Essential Oil. Why are doTERRA Oils more expensive than high street stores?

There are a number of reasons why people come and work with me and they are that they get a personal individual consultation, they have an ITOVI scan so that we can both see what’s going on within the body the client also gets an emailed copy, emailed information documents for a specific health concern or information on a certain oil, the knowledge and information on where every single bottle of oil is sourced from www.sourcetoyou.com, the only thing in the bottle of oil is the pure Essential Oil there are no other ingredients whatsoever. If you take a bottle of Lemon there are 65 lemon rinds in the bottle and 10,000 rose petals to make a 5ml bottle of Rose Essential Oil. Here is a picture of all the counties where dōTERRA source their oils from:

Where Essential Oils Come From

Why should I buy from you rather than a well known high street shop?

I am able to offer a very personal service to fit around your life and advise on the best oils for your needs at that particular time. I can offer you a free wellness consultation including a ITOVI scan which measures the energy and bio-impedance (body composition) within your body at that time. This report can also be emailed to you for you to read at your leisure. I have a huge amount of literature and documentation to share with you. You can contact me by phone, email, face to face meeting and social media channels at a time to suit you.

How long will the oils last once they are opened?

A dōTERRA bottle of oil will last a long time but to get the most benefit 4 years is recommended once it has been opened.

Do I only use 1 drop at a time?

Yes totally. So many people think I’m joking when I say just 1 drop. They are so pure that that is all you need. Did you know 1 drop of peppermint is the equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea!

I don’t like the taste of some of the oils, how else can I use them?

So you can put the oil in a diffuser or you can rub onto the heels of the feet or add some drops into a capsule and take internally in water or food. Here is some further information for you https://www.doterra.com/US/en/blog/healthy-living-using-the-herbal-oils

Why do you suggest putting onto the heels of my feet?

When you put a drop of oil onto the heels of the feet it gets into the body with 20-30 seconds and goes to the place that it is needed and starts to work. Some people do not like the smell of some of the oils but know they need to use them so it’s a great way of using them very effectively. Here is some further information for you https://www.oilsbyjo.co.uk/news/article/why-put-essential-oils-on-the-soles-of-the-feet.html

What is Co Impact sourcing?

In addition to supplying the highest quality essential oils doTERRA is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of farmers, harvesters, and distillers who contribute to oil production.

With over 100 essential oils in its product line, doTERRA sources its oils from over 40 countries —more than half of which could be considered developing countries. To ensure that small scale farmers and harvesters in disadvantaged areas are treated ethically, doTERRA has introduced an initiative called Co-Impact Sourcing.

Co-Impact Sourcing is an initiative that seeks to develop long-term, mutually beneficial supplier partnerships while creating sustainable jobs and providing reliable income in underdeveloped areas. doTERRA is committed to the ethical treatment of its suppliers by providing on-time payments at fair prices. Growers and harvesters are encouraged to form cooperative groups to share collective benefits and bargaining power while improving skills and capacity.

Additionally, the Healing Hands Foundation, doTERRA’s charitable organization, provides funding and resources to create community-based, social-impact projects to improve lives in the larger communities where oils are sourced. Past projects include building or sponsoring existing medical clinics, installing drinking water and irrigation systems, building schools, and providing other educational resources such as vocational training programs. I have lots more information on this website too from many of the wonderful projects.

What are the best oils for training?

I am an Athletics coach so use dōTERRA Essential Oils every day for aches, pains, tendons, muscles issues, growing pains, Osgood schlatters, broken bones, etc. In my experience as a coach I would suggest a drop of Lemon in your water to help keep you hydrated. Deep Blue on the areas that you are going to work (arms, legs) due to the fact this contains peppermint this will start to warm up the muscles and make it easier to do stretches and specific warm up drills. Use Deep Blue before going to bed to help repair the muscles and stop any aches the following morning. Breathe is great for opening up the airways so for example cold weather training is can really support this. Peppermint can give you energy and focus. If you have an injury there could be a specific oil that could help before, during and after training or competition. The range of vitamins can also support the body with all the nutrients that you need to keep your healthy. We also have a product called Mito 2 Max which can help with energy. Here is some further information for you https://www.doterra.com/US/en/blog/product-spotlight-supplements-daily-vitality and https://www.doterra.com/US/en/blog/healthy-living-doterra-for-athletes

What is the best oil for coughs?

I suggest to my clients to smell Breathe as this seems to support and clear sinus issues very quickly with just 1 long deep breathe in. Eucalyptus and Cardamom is also very good for supporting sinus issues. I have had great success with many people with ongoing dry and persistent coughs with Oregano and Thyme. I also recommend the Vapour stick as this can be rubbed onto the chest and the heels of the feet. If there is a sore throat then you can also gargle on On Guard or Melaleuca or simply add 1 drop to the throat area.

How do I stop my whole family from picking up every cough and cold?

As a family we use On Guard every single evening before bed. We add 1 drop to fractionated coconut oil and rub onto the heels of our feet. For us this seems to keep the immune system topped up. Here is some further information for youhttps://www.doterra.com/US/en/p/on-guard-oil

What is the best oil for study?

We have a focus blend which consists of lovely calming oils such as Lime, Frankincense, Ylang Ylang, Roman Chamomile, Sandalwood and Patchouli.

Focus Blend Essential Oil

What is Deep Blue and why is it so effective for muscles?

Deep Blue is a blend and contains a few different oils and they are Peppermint, Blue Tansy, Blue Chamomile, Osmanthus, Wintergreen, Ylang Ylang, Helichrysum and Camphor. Deep Blue essential oil is designed to help people suffering from any kind of muscle or joint pain. This oil can be diluted with a carrier oil and massaged directly onto the affected area as often as needed to obtain relief from the pain. The most distinctive and appealing aspect of this oil is its ability to treat both mild and severe pain. For instance, Deep Blue can be applied to tired muscles after a long workout, or to children’s legs while they experience growing pains. It can also be used to help heal headaches, bruises, back aches, and many other kinds of muscle pain.

Besides these uses for treating mild, acute muscle and joint pain, however, Deep Blue offers a powerful and effective treatment for chronic and intense pain. For instance, the oil is effective in relieving consumers of the deep aches of fibromyalgia, of the intense pain of sprains and whiplash, and the severity of bone spurs and bone pain. The oil can even be used to treat conditions as severe as scoliosis, sciatica, and herniated discs. As a result, consumers may use this oil to loosen up stiff muscles after working at the computer all day, or use it to alleviate the pain of sever scoliosis. Deep Blue has proven to be equally effective in either situation. Deep Blue may even be used to alleviate certain conditions such as fevers that do not necessarily have to do with the muscles and joints.

Deep Blue works immediately and effectively. The oil can reduce or eliminate pain upon contact, and the effects can last through the next day. In addition to alleviating pain, it can also improve circulation. Here is some further information for you https://www.doterra.com/US/en/blog/spotlight-deep-blue-soothing-blend

Do you have any suggestions for anxiety especially through exams?

There are quite a number of suggestions that I can make starting with organising your revision time, plenty of sleep, warm bath with Epsom salts and Lavender, turning mobile devices off 1 hour before bed, listening to relaxing music, eat a balanced and healthy diet, drink lots of water (add Lemon), quiet time (Yoga, Mindfulness and Meditation). Should you struggle to remember things then Rosemary could possible help with retaining information as could In Tune this is also known as the study blend, should you feel overwhelmed and have anxiety then I can suggest an oil called Balance. This is also called the grounding blend as it has a blend of oils which help with those out of control feelings.

How can I help and share the oils with you?

I have had a number of existing clients ask me this and I think this is because like me we just have a need and desire to help people. To help people whether it is a family member or a friend with their health and wellness in a natural way is such an amazing situation to be in. So what I suggest to people is just get 1 bottle of oil that they have had a great experience with and just share it with family and friends. I can supply some small sample bottles and simply add 5-10 drops of that particular oil and let them know how you have used it (I am always around to help with the use) and let them have their own experience. There is so much information that I am able to provide to you on the oils, all you have to do is ask. If they then want to purchase their own oil then if you have an account you will have a website and they can visit that and place an order. Please just ask if you need any help with this or I can place any orders for you - I’m always happy to help.

What are the costs in getting involved with doTERRA as I was thinking of adding this to my business to help support my clients even further?

The best way to get started is to get a membership which entitles you to wholesale prices of the oils. I would always suggest getting a kit, we have many kits to choose from. The cost of the kit includes the membership, postage, 25% cheaper products, access to specific links and information and your own website so that you, family and friends can purchase the oils. Here is some further information on some kits - click here >>

I have heard Essential Oils can be dangerous for animals?

Recently there have been a few incidents involving animals being ill from Essential Oils, there are quite a few different stories, I can only comment on what I have heard and read. I am connected to a US vet and she uses dōTERRA in her vets practice and this is where you can find out more about these stories. There is 1 story that I have heard and that was where a diffuser was in a kitchen and a family cat had accidentally knocked over the diffuser and some of the Tea Tree Essential Oil had leaked out and the cat has decided to lick it up. When the owner got home from work the cat was very quiet and not it’s normal self, the owner realised what had happened and called the vet and I’m happy to say the cat is fit and well. Her name is Dr Janet Roark

Here are some further information sheets for cats, dogs and horses.

What’s the difference in the oil, beadlets, capsules or softgels?

These are just the different forms that the oil can come in. Some people prefer to use the oil straight out of the bottle, others prefer to take internally in a capsule, beadlet or softgel. We are all different in our tastes and as such prefer to use the oils in our preferred way. I can make up capsules for people with their required oils. During the cold season I make up the flu bomb for my clients and this is similar to having cold/flu capsules bought from chemists but in a natural way.

Essential Oil Flu Bomb Recipe

I’ve heard Frankincense kills cancer is this true?

This is a question I get asked a great deal. There is so much research on this information. I have personally worked with clients that have had cancer and have a number of clients that are working through cancer at the moment. There is no magic cure it’s about a complete lifestyle change which includes changing the diet, looking at what products you are using that are going into your body, drinking more water, positive mindset, exercising, using Essential Oils and trying to relax whether that is by reading a book, going for a walk, yoga, meditation or mindfulness. This is a great link for information https://draxe.com/frankincense-oil-cancer/

Do I put the Melaleuca oil in my ear for tinnitus?

No you never put any oils in your ear. The best way to support this is to add 1 drop of Melaleuca to a carrier oil such as coconut oil or olive oil in the palm of your hand and rub all around the ear and the ear lobe. Melaleuca has anti-viral properties so will be a great support and help with this.

How can I find out about all the other dōTERRA products?

These events are really interesting and informative as you can also taste and smell them too. This website is also an area where you can find out more about the product range.

How do I dilute and with what?

A number of people I have met have oils and are unsure how to use them. A carrier oil is an oil that you may have in your kitchen cupboards or your beauty cupboards ranging from Olive oil to Coconut oil. Here is some further information on Carrier Oils https://www.doterra.com/US/en/blog/healthy-living-different-types-of-carrier-oils. Carrier oils are used to dilute essential oils prior to topical application. The term carrier oil is derived from their purpose in carrying the essential oil onto the skin. It can also drive it into the skin more effective.

How do you know if your oil needs a carrier oil?

On most occasions it is best to use a carrier oil for a number of reasons as the oil will go further, go deeper into the skin and to dilute in some cases.

Are there any dōTERRA oils that are not safe to ingest?

Yes there are. If you look on the side of the bottle it will say the Essential Oil is a food supplement that means it is safe to ingest. If it says Essential Oil then it is not recommended for internal use. Wintergreen, Birch, Cedarwood, Deep Blue, Eucalyptus and White Fir. are a few oils NOT to be ingested. Here is some further information on Ingesting oils https://www.doterra.com/US/en/blog/science-safety-physiology-safe-to-ingest-essential-oils

Where can you find easy information about the Essential Oils?

There is a highly recommended book called The Modern Essentials which has a huge amount of interesting and relevant information. The cost of this book is currently £25 and you can purchase these from me. There is also an app that you can download from the App Store called The Modern Essentials the cost of this is currently £6.99.

What do I do if I use the wrong oil?

Essential oils are all the rage lately, and with good reason. They are a natural remedy with incredible powers. But with great power comes great responsibility, and there are many essential oil resources online giving advice, I would always recommend using a reputable company and advisor.

Because of the strength of essential oils you must use them correctly and dilute as necessary. Please don’t hesitate to contact me for any advice or come along to 1 of my events.

Why are some Essential Oils more expensive than others?

If you have ever looked for prices you must have noticed the hefty price tag they come with. What causes the tiny bottles to cost so much? Is it only the branding & marketing hype? May be not. Pure natural essential oils have every reason to be expensive. Let us take a detailed look into these reasons, Originally, essential oils are produced from plant parts & the environment in which the plants are grown majorly influence the quality as well as the quantity of the oil produced. Even the presence of particular chemical compounds in an essential oil often depends on the growing environment of the plant as well as the farming choices of the cultivator.

In order to cultivate a plant that will be used as a raw material for essential oil extraction specific farming conditions need to be maintained, which is available only at a higher cost. The essential oils are produced from different parts of different plants. The handling of the plant parts can have a serious impact on the quality of the oil produced. Moreover, the time of harvesting, even the day or the night, can have a serious impact on the quality of the oil. Some plant parts are required to be processed immediately after harvest to maintain the quality. Hence skilled workforce is necessary. Essential oils are highly concentrated plant constituents and for producing a single drop of essential oil a considerable amount of the raw plant material is needed.

  • To produce just 1Kg of lavender essential oil around 130kg of lavender flowers are used. A 15ml bottle of pure lavender essential oil that you buy from the store is prepared from around 1.5Kg of lavender flowers.
  • For producing 500ml of pure rose essential oil around 5000kg of rose petals are needed. The 5ml rose essential oil available in tiny bottles are produced from around 50Kg of rose petals.
  • To produce around 1kg of lemon essential oil around 3,000 lemons are used. So, a 15ml bottle of lemon essential oil is made from around 50 lemons.

Essential oils are highly concentrated and they differ considerably in molecular structure, chemical composition, therapeutic & cosmetic properties compared to any other oils.

How many drops do I use as surely 1 drop won’t make a difference?

Yes you only use 1 drop at a time, they are such wonderful and powerful oils.

Are there any Essential Oils not safe for babies and children?

There are many highly recommended oils to be used for babies and children. I have many documents that I can share with you that will help support you and your baby and child - click here for PDFs about essential oils and babies and pregnancy and please contact me for any further info.

How do I learn to do the Aromatouch Massage as I work with in the massage and beauty industry?

There are regular training days in the UK where you can learn this technique. It takes a full day from 10am until 4pm the cost is currently £125 and this includes the training, hand outs and the Aromatouch Oils. Please email me if you would like any further information at jo@oilsbyjo.co.uk.

How do I find out about Essential Oil information and training events?

I carry out regular events from my Oil Shack in Chelmsford, they are for everybody whether you have never used an oil, have a few and not too sure what to do with them, have lots and need more, have lots but not sure what to do with them all, want to know how to build a business around them, have a health issue and need some help and advice, want to implement into your business as an added feature to be different and give more or just want to come and meet some lovely people and learn. Please have a look at this website for all event details.

How do I arrange to have an evening with a few friends and for you to share the oils with them?

All we have to do is find a suitable date and time for us both. I would suggest setting up a facebook event so that I can share some interesting information on what to expect and I share lots of great hints and tips before the day. On the day if you can provide some water for all your friends so that they can smell an oil, drink a drop of lemon oil in the water and then rub and oil onto their wrist. So that they have experienced all the 3 different ways these oils can be used. The event usually lasts about an hour and then there is time for questions and I can provide free samples. For me these events are about education and I don’t ever push sales I just want you to relax and have a fun evening of learning with your family and friends.

Is there a minimum number for a party?

No not at all, I offer personal 121 meetings as well as having a few work colleagues during a lunchtime or family and friends one evening. I tend to find 8 people are a good number for interaction and having fun?

What’s the minimum spend at a party?

I don’t sell anything at parties it is just for education and sharing the power of the oils. I share documents and provide free samples for your family and friends to try. I do recommend setting up a Facebook event so that I can share some top tips before the event on sleeping, stress etc.

Do I need lots of food and drink for a party?

No not at all - all I ask is for a glass of water so that your friends can try a drink with some lemon in - on some occasions people have been known to add lemon and lime to their gin and tonic!!

What’s the best thing about working with dōTERRA?

Wow there are so many that I can think of. Some days are very emotional for me and they are when I see and hear people’s life changing experiences from using the oils. I have 2 clients that always make me emotional as I have been on their journey with them every step of the way and to see their positive results are just phenomenal. I love working with my team empowering them to believe anything and everything is possible and seeing their lives improve by just setting goals and plans together and working together until we get there. Meeting so many wonderful, heart centred people on a regular basis that are on the same wellness and health journey with me and sharing all our knowledge with each other. Seeing the huge benefits that dōTERRA makes to the world - all over the world and in 3rd world countries is just heart warming. The personal development and the training is just mind blowing every single time it just gets better and better.

What’s your favourite oil?

Oh my word - I can’t possible say 1! It changes everyday believe me. Personally I love Aromatouch everyday of the week as it just puts the body in a place of calm . The product that I have had most success with is Deep Blue and very closely followed by Balance. Deep blue for the coaching and Balance for the anxiety issues.

What oils do your daughter’s use most of?

My eldest who is a teacher is On Guard and Melaleuca to keep her immune system topped up and the youngest who is the athlete lavender, Breathe and Wild Orange.

What’s your favourite emotional oil?

That’s an easy one for me - Cheer, this to me is like sunshine in a bottle. I also use Motivate on a regular basis too.

What’s the hardest thing about working with dōTERRA?

I think this has to be not being able to help everyone and people not using the oils after they have purchased them from other people. If you meet anyone like that send them my way, I just love helping people. I also do a lot of cross team training because I want to empower as many people as possible to share these oils, whether they are in my team or not. Finding out people just turn to tablets as they are unaware that there is a natural way, hoping 1 day I will get to share these amazing products with them.

I’ve heard there is a lot of chemicals in products now such as shampoos and body creams, why is this and do you have a natural solution?

Unfortunately that is true!!  We have some natural products such as shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, face creams, laundry detergent and a spa range too, I am happy to forward any of this information to you so you can read and digest. All of doTERRA’s products are natural.

How can I try dōTERRA products as they are quite expensive and I don’t know if I will like them or if they will work?

DōTERRA products are all natural and that is why they can be more expensive than other companies however they are more cost effective as you only ever need to use 1 drop at a time compared with possibly more drops with other companies. I am happy to provide samples for you to use and have your own experience and I would appreciate some feedback so that I know they have worked for your particular issue. We will try as many samples and products as we need to ensure that you have the best outcome.

What are rollerballs?

Rollerballs are small glass jars that we can customize to your particular oil requirements. So we add the oil and then fill up with coconut oil to make it easier for you to use as you simply roll the oil on to the areas of concern.

Great question and a lot of people do, but they are so much more that just aromatherapy and a nice smell - they are a natural solution to modern day healthcare https://www.doterra.com/US/en/blog/healthy-living-what-is-aromatherapy

I'm a school teacher so get very tired and stressed, what oils would you recommend?

So my eldest daughter is a teacher too and is currently teaching Year 2 so ages 5-6 and had originally had lots of coughs, colds, sickness and nits until we got the Family Kit. This kit has really helped her. She uses all of the oils in the kit on a regular basis but for focus and energy Peppermint in her favourite (also good for headaches). For calming during the stressful situations its Lavender. She prefers the rollerballs (touch) so that she can roll them on quickly and keep them in her handbag.

Im going travelling for a while, what would you suggest taking with me?

Ok so I often get asked this question. I always ask what countries are you visiting and when are you travelling as with most countries the climates change throughout the year. The basic 1st aid kit I would suggest would be Digest Zen for tummy, Terrashield for insect repellant, for jet lag Peppermint and Lavender. Lavender is also good for sunburn, bites and rashes. Deep Blue for aches and pains and if any physical activity and On Guard for immune support the amount of people that cough and splutter when on an aeroplane is huge. Here us some more information https://www.doterra.com/US/en/blog/healthy-living-using-essential-oils-while-traveling

So I would suggest attending a class with me to start with or at least having a consultation first. I can do skype or phone consultations too. Just using 1 drop at a time. Read the back of the bottles. https://www.doterra.com/US/en/blog/healthy-living-what-you-should-know-before-using-oils
