Why Do We Need Sleep?

Sleep can be such a big issue for so many people and for various amounts of reasons.

Lavender Essential OilSome people worry about their family, things that have happened at work, things they have to do and also the fact that the bedroom is not as comfortable as it could be.

I have always been very lucky and never had any problems with sleep, however I do tend to work too late and then this takes me longer to switch off and relax.

We all need to relax to recharge our brains and bodies to enable us to be productive the following day for work and our families.

I have put together some handy tips below that I hope will help you and these vary from things to drink leading up to bedtime and also using essential oils to try and calm the brain early in the evening.

There is also so much information with podcasts and books that you can get some great useful tips from too and in my health and safety role I have given some information on the science behind sleep here.

Tips to help sleep

Adults who do not receive a sufficient amount of sleep each night can implement some positive lifestyle and sleep habits in order to log the needed seven to nine hours. These include the following:

  • Establish a realistic bedtime and stick to it every night, even on the weekends.
  • Maintain comfortable temperature settings and low light levels in your bedroom.
  • Make sure you have a comfortable sleep environment – including your mattress and pillows
  • Consider a “screen ban” on televisions, computers and tablets, phones, and other electronic devices in your bedroom.
  • Abstain from caffeine, alcohol, and large meals in the hours leading up to bedtime.
  • Use essential oils before bed and possible in the bath to relax a few hours earlier. The oils will help to relax and quieten the brain to prepare the body for sleep. Add a drop of lavender oil to your feet as you climb into bed.
